Queues, Duomo, Gold and a mountain to climb.

Today was our first early start since Rome, but all for a good cause, Florence.

Leaving Castiglion Fiorentino at 8:30 we were on the local/regional train and heading for Florence. Before boarding the train we ensured we filled in our Eurail pass with
today's date.  This validates the pass for unlimited train travel on the day.

Castiglion Fiorentino Station
Even though we once again were in first class, we found ourselves a seat and enjoyed the ride. As with all regional trains this was similar to the V Line service, but we didn't break down and the train ran on time.

Our first port of call was to see the statue of David in Accademia Gallery. On arrival we were very shocked to see the line stretching for at least 400 meters. Originally we were given the impression that there would be a very small line. So as we only wanted to go in to see the statue of David we decided to take a loss and continue to the Duomo.

The Duomo was just impressive, pictures speak better than words.

Under the Duomo

After getting a little holy again it was time for Katie to look at some pretty things on Ponte Vecchio, this is the oldest bridge in Florence and is lined with shops on each side of it, all selling gold and silver.

Our next stop was Piazzale Michelangelo. Taking about 45 minutes to walk to the Piazzale it was just lovely walking along side the Arno River, but then was the climb to the top. We made it and it was well worth the effort. It was quite satisfying to see many tourists getting to the top on buses and knowing we had climbed (the equivalent of Mount Everest)

The view looking back over Florence was just spectacular. (thanks Mr American tourist for taking our photo)

Walking back down we found ourselves in a Gelato shop (the best we've had in Italy thus far) and then back on the train.

Ohh, we didn't need to validate our Eurail pass by writing on the date as no ticket inspector came through the carriage.

Last nights sunset.
